Dr. Claudio Castillón Lévano was born on December 15, 1954 in Trujillo, Peru and would go on to be the most diverse and prolific Hispanic inventor of our time. He earned his BS and MS in Telecommunications Engineering before earning his PhD in Electrical Engineering at the National University of Engineering in Lima, Peru. Through this study of telecommunications, he made scientific advancements in the field of wireless communications systems until his focus turned to the field of neonatal care. He invented the Aeolian-Copler, which converts wind into electrical energy.
While neonatal incubators have been used, as early as 1800, the premature baby death rate was high in Latin America and the Caribbean. Claudio and his team at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Group of Research and Development of Medical Equipment and Systems, developed a fully-enclosed portable respirator and incubator that dramatically decreased the chance for change for infection. The “Neonatal Artificial Bubble” dramatically increased the life expectancy of premature babies and continues to be improved upon, as Claudio and his team patented the “Incuven,” in 2004. He has 6 patents to his name.
