Scarlin Hernandez is a Dominican-American astronautical engineer for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. She was born in the Dominican Republic, then moved to Brooklyn, NY at the age of 4. She earned her BS in Computer Engineering from Capitol Technology University (CTU) in Laurel, MD. Her undergraduate studies were funded by a full scholarship from the National Science Foundation. At the age of 20, she completed an internship at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center working on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. Following graduation, she took a position as a mission planning lead and system engineer for the TRMM mission before she began working on the James Webb Space Telescope mission.
She started a Society of Women Engineers Chapter at CTU. At the Space Telescope Institute (STScI) she launched a mentorship program and the Women Empowering Women Group. In 2022 she was named in the Forbes Dominican Republic Las 50 Mujeres Poderosas República Domicana and won the National Award of the Youth from the Dominican Republic. She continues to advocate and inspire other Hispanic scientists to pursue their dreams in STEM fields
