SCHEQ Founder and CEO, Eugene Manley, Jr., PhD, presented to the students on 10/19/2024 as part of NYU’s College & Career Lab (CCL) Practice Lab at the Silver Center for Arts and Science. The CCL is a tuition free , six-year program offered to New York City middle and high school to give them exposure to various academic career paths and learn from different professionals in these fields. It is targeted toward first generation, low income, and/or diverse scholars to prepare them for post-secondary education. Dr. Manley talked about his career path in STEM and patient advocacy and presented about lung cancer disparities.
Practice Lab is offered once a month and Dr. Manley was asked to present in October. For this Practice Lab session, he created an interactive exercise where the students were able to combine strategy, business, development, marketing, event planning, and analysis into creating a cancer conference. He wanted the students to think about some of the factors that go into planning an event realted to health equity. Since these were high school students, the concepts were kept general to give them room to think through what was important at each step. At the end, he showed some of the planning that then went into the 2nd SCHEQ Lung Cancer Health Equity Summit (LCHES) that will be occuring Nov 18-19 at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Suwanee, GA.
Dr. Manley stated “It is always a pleasure to go into these environments and talk to kids. At this age, many still do not get to see people that look like them or have their same lived experiences in STEM fields. I really do not care about having my PhD for the title, but it is to show those kids that you can become anything you want.”
Thank you NYU CCL for inviting us to present. The students were very engaged and we hope the learned something that they can use at some point in their futures.
