SCHEQ’s 2023 Year in Photos

We have accomplished a lot this year since SCHEQ‘s launch in August. We decided to summarize some our efforts to increase STEMM workforce diversity, advocate for underserved populations, mentorship, and lung cancer in photos.

SACNAS Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans (SACNAS) National Diversity in STEM Conference – Portland, Oregon.

  • We attended the 50th Anniversary SACNAS conference that focuses on mentorship, training, diversity, and community for historically excluded scholars. There were roughly 5,645 attendees.
  • Dr. Manley participated in the Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (#LPSLI) this summer, and his cohort received their program completion pins.
  • We presented at the Developing Skills for Advanced Careers in Biology for the NSF Postdoctoral Fellows PRFB Broadening Participation 2022 Cohort Workshop on nonprofit careers.
  • We met with and mentored 20 scholars that participated in the 2023 SACNAS Postdoc Leadership Institute in October.
  • We participated in the 1-to-1 mentoring program with SACNAS STEM leaders and mentored 2 graduate students.

Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS)Phoenix, AZ

  • ABRCMS used to solely focus on minoritized undergraduates, but in the last several years they have included programming for all career stages. There were 6,051 attendees.
  • Dr. Manley served as a reviewer of Cancer Biology poster competition submissions.
  • Dr. Manley moderated a Cancer Biology Oral Presentation session during the Graduate Student symposium that had 5 speakers.
  • We spoke on a panel about STEM Career paths in Cancer Biology that had >500 participants that included students, staff, faculty, program directors, and STEM professionals.
  • Dr. Manley served as a Mentor-Judge and judged 9 posters in the Engineering, Physics, and Math student poster competition.

  • We spoke on a panel about using social media for cause and impact to increase awareness, patient advocacy, and building trust.

Satcher Health Leadership Institute (SHLI) at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) Lung Cancer Health Equity Summit Atlanta, GA

  • Panelist on Training the Next Generation of Scholars in lung cancer.
  • We spoke about the invisible challenges of navigating academia and medicine, lack of mentoring, and strategies to develop programs that will increase long-term success of historically excluded groups.
